About Naples

Naples is truly a little bit of paradise. Every corner of our area holds an image of tropical bliss, gently  swaying palm trees and technicolor sunsets to landscaped communities and sparkling waterways. Naples’ plentiful sunshine and fresh air lends an ideal ambiance of year-round living.

Local businesses, community organizations, and individuals welcome our locals, seasonal residents, newcomers and international tourists venturing to Naples because of its reputation

as a beautifully beachfront

community. Naples is a great

place to visit and to live.

NAPLES through the years...

The first road between Naples and Fort Myers was completed in 1918, when the ox trail was improved with shell, making regular bus service possible during the dry season.

The roaring Twenties did not pass Naples by. During these racy time, the townspeople and winter visitors danced the Charleston under the stars to phonograph music on the pier. Signs were erected, which read: "do not throw fish on the dance floor."

In July 1923, Collier County officially became a county. The area was originally part of Lee County, which was broken into three separate entities: Lee, Hendry and Collier Counties.

Travelers on the Tamiami Trail heading east toward Miami, wonder about Carnestown. Shown on road maps, there are no inhabitants or buildings there. However, Carnestown was

originally constructed as a work camp for those building the Tamiami Trail. It has a large mess hall, several sleeping cottages and a warehouse. When all the buildings were removed, "Believe It or Not, Ripley" was so intrigued that he included Carnestown

in one of his articles, calling it "the town without a building." In recent years a Highway patrol Station and a gas station are situated there.

When Naples was originally platted, a road ran down the beach and was called Gulf Street. The beach was once nearly 100 feet wide and over the years has eroded until Gulf Street now is located far out in the Gulf Of Mexico.

William Uihlien, former chairman of the Schlitz Brewing established Naples' water plant. He bought bonds with his own money and would not permit the City to pay him any interest.

Everglades City sustained tremendous damage during Hurricane Donna in 1960, and shortly thereafter, the county seat was moved to Naples.

Captain W. T. Collier invented a clam digger to be used at the Caxambas clam factory. According to stories told by old-timers, the clams were the size of two fists and were canned and shipped from Marco as "Maine Little Neck Clams."
